SJCBA offers scholarships to assist local students in the pursuit of a legal career. Check below for scholarship details or contact SJCBA for information about how to apply.

Clarence Chan Scholarship

The Clarence Chan Scholarship, established by the San Joaquin County Bar Foundation and the SJCBA Honorable Frank Kim Asian/Pacific Islanders Section, supports students pursuing a legal career. Applicants are required to submit a one-page, double-spaced essay detailing their motivation for entering the legal field and their plans to contribute to the San Joaquin County community, particularly in relation to the Asian/Pacific Islander community. This scholarship is open to high school, college, and law students. Recipients are selected based on academic achievement, community involvement, and the quality of their essay responses.

The 2025 application period is closed.

 

Vittoria Bossi Scholarship

Sponsored by San Joaquin County Bar Foundation and the SJCBA Criminal Law Section

The Vittoria Bossi Scholarship was created to honor Vittoria Bossi, an SJCBA member and long-time attorney in San Joaquin County who passed away on March 17, 2021. She was a graduate of San Francisco State University and Hastings College of Law (1991). Her friends and colleagues remember her as a tough attorney with a soft heart.

Two (2) scholarships will be awarded (not less than $1,500 each) to law school students who meet the following requirements:

  • Enrolled part time or full time in an ABA or California State Bar accredited law school geographically located in California; AND
  • A graduate of a San Joaquin County high school OR has continuously lived in San Joaquin County for no less than a 2-year period immediately prior to submission of the scholarship application; AND
  • Other relevant factors that will be considered include academic achievement, community service and involvement, career goals and special circumstances as demonstrated by the completed scholarship application.

The 2025 application period is closed.

 

The Honorable Judge Franklin Stephenson Scholarship

The Honorable Judge Franklin Stephenson Scholarship was established to honor the memory of San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Franklin Stephenson. Judge Stephenson was an integral member of the San Joaquin County community. He was a Little League Coach, an avid sports fan, a Professor of Law at Humphrey Law School, and a local Superior Court Judge. The scholarship is aimed to further his efforts and to help students fulfill their goals of becoming productive members of the local legal community.

Minimum requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a law-related field for the school year; and
  • Plans to pursue a career in the practice of law.

Scholarship applications are not open for submission at this time.

 

SJCBA Women Lawyers Section Scholarship: 2026 Application Deadline is July 31, 2026

All women-identifying law school students who: 1) have successfully completed the first year of law school, and 2) intend to practice law in San Joaquin County, can apply for the San Joaquin County Bar Association’s (SJCBA) Women Lawyers Section Scholarship.

Minimum requirements:

  • Your interest in pursuing a career in law;
  • Any extra-curricular activities in which you are involved;
  • How your practice of law will benefit your community; and
  • How this scholarship will assist you in the pursuit of your legal education.
